Gary - Have you looked into evacuated solar tubes?

Dear Gary,

There are no cases of evacuated tubes having issues in your website. I am concerned that your website generalizes on all solar water heaters whereas these issues cannot happen in the tube system. (They do have other issues if overheat is not treated right).

On your articles both TV3 and the Nats have it wrong I have since talked to Nick Smith on this, we have put through a small amount under the government grant scheme and received the $500 back. The issue is not over priced solar (I do not think you will find a wealthy solar company in NZ) and it is generally 30% cheaper to install solar in NZ than in Aus. The issue with the grant scheme is the formula for calculating the threshold is flawed making the payback longer than it really is, and, installation in New Zealand is expensive (a plumbers hourly rate is typically $65) therefore the install costs are typically around $1700.

Anyway maybe you should look at the evacuated tube system as an alternative to solving the problems you are highlighting

I have installed an Swiss AMK evacuated tube system with a Chromagen tank. Look for the articles I am posting on this website about it. I love the sytem and have had a trouble free run to date.

Excellent service and so far our biggest power bill this winter has been $67. Mind you, we have worked very hard as a family to achieve these savings.

With regards to evacuated tubes, there are many dodgy ones out there that I will soon be reporting on. My advice is to go with an established firm.

Hi, Gary we were agents for AMK in Northland and were dismayed as you were about the agents demise. I contacted AMK, and they could not get a supplier to replace, so cease operations here. Replacement parts are available from other suppliers.
Finding tubes, which are made in China, that fit, should be possible.
Cheers

Following is a letter I have just sent to Brian Cox.
Executive Officer, Solar Industries Association.
Dunno whether it'll do any good.

Dear Brian
I have talked to many installers with the same story. Since mid 2008, solar work has virtually stopped throughout the country.
The building downturn notwithstanding, I believe that, in no small measure, the reason for this demise, is the serious negative publicity that arose through the two major suppliers refusing to acknowledge the serious defects which arose in their product.

A recall for these two years ago, and we would still have a trade.

It was quite obvious that the then government also lost confidence in solar hot water heating.

I was involved at the start of TELARC testing laboratories for pressure vessels.
As we built it, this became a world class institution.
The testing regime for solar panels has been, and still is, quite inadequate.

The inability of SIA to ensure that all solar systems were up to European standard was of deep concern.
Gary Moeller writes on his website that he pursued your cooperation for two years, before he finally took things into his own, very accomplished hands. The result is now the history for which the industry is now paying.

From your letter, I cannot see any sign of change. Please advise me when a recall of all faulty panels has been announced.

Yours sincerely

Thanks for this information. As Winter is approaching and the demand of water heater will also increase. As the demand will rise, so the price will also rise. But you have to select a geyser which should last for years. Select from among the top water heater and geyser brands.
